06 December 2024 Bank of Uganda dismisses that its IT system was hacked into and over 62 billion shillings stolen by a group of hackers from South East Asia. This after reports that a group of hackers identified as ‘waste’ penetrated the Central Bank’s IT system and walked away with the money in question in just 60 seconds. The hacking incident was confirmed by the State Minister for finance in charge of General Duties Henry Musasizi while appearing before Parliament this week. However , in a what seems to be a turn of events , the Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor Michael Atingi Ego explains that the system was never hacked but instead Bank of Uganda erred and in the process of paying the World Bank 6.134 million dollars which it paid to a wrong party Road Way Company through a bank in Japan. He says the other payment was meant for African Development Fund which was meant to be paid 8.596 million dollars but instead paid MJS International in London. Atingi-Ego says the two incidents were initiated outside of the BOU IT system. He however says part of the money has been recovered and efforts are underway to recover the other funds.
