EC starts update of National voters register ahead of 2026 polls.

20 January 2025
The Electoral Commission starts the exercise for the General Update of the National Voters Register, in preparation for the 2025–2026 General Elections.
Electoral Commission Spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi says the update exercise will be conducted from 20th January until 10th February 2025, at all 10,717 parishes throughout country, starting from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Mucunguzi says the purpose of the update exercise is to enable eligible Ugandan citizens of 18 years and above, who are not yet registered as voters, to do so.
He saya the exercise will also enable registered voters who wish to transfer to new voting locations, to apply for such transfer.
“A person who is already registered as a voter anywhere in Uganda does not need to register again. The update exercise will enable such registered voters to check and confirm that their particulars are correct and appear on the Voters Register at the voting locations that they indicated during registration” said Mucunguzi.
Now , during the exercise, students who were registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and have since attained the age of 18 years will be able to present their particulars, that is, the National Identification Number (NIN), for updating and assignment of a polling station within their parish of residence or origin.
In the meantime, during this exercise, the Commission will also compile and update the following Voters’ Registers for the National Youths Voters’ Register , the National PWDs Voters’ Register and the National Older Persons Voters’ Register .
The Electoral Commission has appointed Monday 10th February 2025, as the cut-off date for registration of voters in Uganda.
The application for registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Uganda will not be conducted after this date.

Mayiga warns against excessive use of social media by Children.

20 January 2025
The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a strong warning to parents regarding the potential dangers of excessive and uncontrolled social media use among children.
Mayiga has acknowledged the importance of the internet in today’s world but cautioned that it is often exploited by unscrupulous individuals.
He cautioned against allowing children to spend excessive hours on these devices, arguing that while social interaction is vital, too much time devoted to social media can lead to addiction and adverse effects on their development.
He made these remarks over the weekend, during the closing ceremony of the two-week Royal Mentorship Camp, known locally as ‘Ekisakaate kya Nnaabagereka,’ held at St. Janan Secondary School in Bombo, Luweero District.
Joining Mayiga, Buganda’s Queen Mother, Nnaaabagereka Sylvia Nnagginda Luswata, highlighted this year’s camp theme, “Integrating Culture with Technology.”
She emphasized the importance of equipping children with the skills necessary to leverage technology in preserving Buganda’s cultural heritage.
This year’s two-week ‘Ekisakaate’, began on January 4 and has been concluded on January 18, 2025.
It attracted more than 600 young participants, including boys and girls aged 6 to 18.
