Women activists petition over water

Women activists from over 17 civil society organizations under their umbrella association Uganda women network (UWONET) have petitioned the ministry of water and environment and National water and sewerage cooperation over the availability, accessibility and affordability of clean and safe water for women.

The activists led by the executive director of Uganda women network Rita Aciro say they are concerned about the challenges that women and girls face in accessing clean and safe water.

Aciro noted that in Uganda women and girls walk an average of 3.7 miles a day, spending up to 6 hours daily collecting water which time would be used for other productive activities.

The women held a walk from Kyadondo rugby grounds to the National water and sewerage plant in Bugolobi after which they engaged the ministry and officials from National Water and sewerage cooperation, as part of the activities to mark the women’s week
