Uganda calls for lasting solution in Burundi

The Ugandan Government says rival forces in Burundi should adhere to the peaceful mechanisms to achieve peace and lasting solution to the political impasse in the country.

The state minister in charge of international relations Okello Oryem says that the regional efforts which had commenced yesterday under the banner of the EAC community provide a better solution to the political problems instead of a military coup.

Yesterday the former head of intelligence in Burundi Maj Godefroid Niyombare announce a coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza but up to now there is still fighting in Burundi with reports indicating that forces loyal to Nkurunziza have an upper hand

Oryem says Uganda supports a peaceful resolution to the problem.

Meanwhile Oryem says that Uganda is ready to host Nkurunziza in any capacity but adds that he has no confirmation for reports that he is already in the country.
