Plant genetic resources on verge of extinction

Agriculturalists are concerned that plant genetic resources for several crops are on the verge of extinction, if nothing is done to reserve them.

Statistics at the ministry of agriculture indicate that out of over 300 varieties spanning 23 major crops, there are only 3 or 4 varieties per crop.

The Director General National Agricultural Research Organization Dr. Ambrose Agona says the resources are threatened by modification in land use, climate change, market demand and companies that use different crop varieties but with no measures of multiplication and reservation.

Speaking during the national validation of the final PGRFA policy, Dr. Agona warns that if these resources are not preserved different crop varieties will totally disappear.
