Mukerere University guild elections postponed

Makerere University management postpones the students’ guild elections that were scheduled for tomorrow over anticipated electoral violence.

The university Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe says the decision follows a series of meetings between security officials, student leaders, guild candidates and the university management.

He says that the students’ Electoral Commission was not ready to conduct the election since it had not appointed polling officials a few hours to polling day.

He adds that the University has also suspended all campaign rallies in order to avert violence after two of the sixteen guild candidates Fred Andama and Arnold Ssemanda were assaulted by violent students from rival camps.
