Mengo deny Museveni

Buganda kingdom officials deny allowing the central government to expand Kampala.

The cultural government refutes claims by president Museveni that they agreed to give up some territory for expansion of Kampala as a capital city in exchange for Lubaga division and Mengo parish.

Under the new Kampala Capital City Bill 2009, Kampala will be expanded to areas in Wakiso, Mukono and Mpigi whose land is owned by Buganda Kingdom setting aside Lubaga division and Mengo parish.

President Museveni revealed yesterday that this was agreed upon in a meeting he held with Buganda officials in 1995 and 2005 during consultations on numerous issues.

However, Mengo’s information minister Charles Peter Mayiga insists that during the two meetings no agreement was arrived at concerning the boundaries of an expanded Kampala.

Mayiga adds that Buganda and central Government could still hold discussions to determine the boundaries of an expanded Kampala and that Buganda must be respected as the major stakeholder.
