Magufuli assures Museveni: We shall not buy your sugar

Tanzania President John Magufulu says that they rejected sugar from Uganda because some traders were taking advantage of open borders to smuggle sugar.

He says the country’s surveys found that some sugar from Uganda was actually manufactured elsewhere and labeled as ‘made in Uganda’, which is a fraud.

Addressing Tanzanian media at State House in Dar-es-Salaam jointly with his visitor Yoweri Museveni Thursday, Magufuli said that in any case, Tanzania has enough locally-made and does not need imports.

Last week, Uganda protested against Tanzania’s actions when 600 tons of Kakira Sugar was denied entry, with Tanzanian customs demanding a 25 percent tax, against EAC trade rules.

Museveni told the media that they had agreed on strengthening economic ties between the two countries including speeding up the Uganda-Tanzania crude oil pipeline
