Lawyers oppose increasing retirement age for judges

The Ugandan Law Society says it’s against a proposal to increase the retirement age for judicial officers as proposed in the constitutional amendment bill now before the legal and parliamentary affairs committee of parliament

Its proposed that the retirement age of justices f the supreme court be increased from 70 to 75 years while that of highcourt judges be increased from 65 to 70 years

The proposal according to Government is aimed at maximizing the experience of those retiring when they are still able to serve

In a position paper presented by Counsel Karoli Ssemwogerere on behalf of the law society president, the lawyers insist that its uncalled for since there many other legal minds who can take up the positions

The stand of the society was backed by the committee vice chairman Stephen Bakka Mugabi saying that many young people want the retirement age of Government officials lowered to address the unemployment situation
