ILO calls for control of risks for workers

The International Labor Organization-ILO says necessary steps should be taken to prevent and control potential risks for workers, workplaces, communities and the environment.

This in a statement to mark the 2014 World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The day is being marked under the theme “Safety and health in the use of chemicals at work“.

ILO notes that Chemicals pose a broad range of potential adverse effects, from health hazards such as cancers and physical ones like flammability, to environmental hazards such as widespread contamination. It says many fires, explosions, and other disasters result from inadequate control of chemicals.

The ILO says significant progress has been made concerning the regulation and management of chemicals in the field of occupational safety and health but more needs to be done.

In Uganda day is being marked under the theme zero accidents, zero diseases at all work places.
