Govt wants Uganda Railways Corporation to take over railway system

Cabinet is discussing how to empower the Uganda Railways Corporation to take over the full management and operation of the current railway system from the Kenyan company Rift Valley Railways.

ICT, information and National Guidance Minister Frank Tumwebaze says that the decision of cabinet to terminate the contract of Rift Valley Railways is based on its alleged poor performance and a realization by Government that it’s important to have a fully functioning railway system for trade and transportation purposes.

The Rift Valley Railway Company which has been in charge of the railways system since 2005 has insisted that they have not entirely failed to perform and that they are seeking for funds that would ensure proper functioning of the railways system between Uganda and Kenya

This as he addressed the weekly government press briefing at the media centre. However minister Tumwebaze says that Uganda Railways Corporation will be funded after cabinet has concluded the discussions next Monday
