Govt moves to provide low cost decent housing

Government says it’s launching a vigorous campaign to address the increase demand for low cost decent housing across the country.

State minister for urban development Dr. Chris Baryomunsi says that Government will on Monday launch several initiatives to ensure that many Ugandans in rural and urban areas get decent but cheap accommodation through the use of savings groups or cooperatives.

Dr Baryomunsi who was addressing Journalists at the media centre ahead of the World Habitat Day due to be commemorated in Mbale on Monday says the 6 policy interventions will be critical in addressing the current gap of 2 million housing units.

Among the policy interventions is redeveloping all slams across with story building.

The Commissioner for urban development Samuel Mabala says that slum dwellers will form cooperatives which will own the land and then enter into an agreement with a developer who will in turn sell the housing units at affordable rates.
