EU joins bodies calling for Bashir’s arrest

Uganda is under pressure to arrest Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir and surrender him to the International Criminal Court (ICC) where he’s wanted for crimes against humanity.

The European Union adds voice to the demands urging Uganda to respect its obligations under international law as a State Party to the ICC.

Bashir is in Uganda for a state visit at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni for bilateral talks and regional security matters.

In a statement signed by the European Union High Representative and Vice President Federica MOGHERINI on behalf of the European Union President, the EU says the state visit of Gen Bashir to Uganda is regrettable and that Uganda and other member states must abide by and implement the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council through which Gen Bashir was indicted.

However government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo says Uganda has already taken a position on the matter
