Day one of the teacher’s strike

Teachers in a number of schools in Kampala and surrounding districts have heeded to the call by their umbrella body to stage a sit down strike demanding a 10% salary increment promised by government.

Under their umbrella body, Uganda National Teacher’s Union, the teachers last week resolved to lay down their tools until government fulfils its pledge of enhancing their pay.

At Buganda road primary school, Bat Valley Primary school and Nakasero primary school, our reporter found children playing with others teaching their colleagues as teachers stay away in protest.

However in Masaka, Radio One’s Ezekiel Ssekweyama has been to at least four public schools and teacher’s there have shunned the strike

In Mubende district, teachers at St Mary’s’ Primary School, St Joseph’s and St Matia Mulumba Prim School-Kalonga teachers have not stepped in class in protest.

However, at Kaweri Model Primary School located at the district headquarters a few teachers have turned up for work

In Luweero, a number of teachers have also shunned the strike noting that the industrial action will in turn affect the students
