Burundi’s army dismisses President Nkurunziza

A Burundi Army General announces the overthrow of President Pierre Nkurunziza amid unrest over his bid to be re-elected to a third term.

Godefroid Niyombare says he is working with civil society groups, religious leaders and politicians to form a transitional government.

Gen Niyombare who said President Pierre Nkurunziza had violated the constitution by seeking a third term, made the comments in a statement to reporters at a military barracks. His remarks were later broadcast on local radio stations.

Maj Gen Niyombareh announced that a national salvation committee had been set up to run the country. Soldiers have reportedly surrounded the offices of the national broadcaster in the capital, Bujumbura.

President Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania meeting other East African leaders to discuss the crisis. His aide dismissed the coup claims as “a joke”.
