Activists want a law to protect telecom consumers from being cheated

Kampala Consumer Watch Dog- a new organization championing the rights of consumers, petitions parliament asking for a law to protect telecommunication service consumers from being cheated.

In a petition presented to the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga, the organization says telecommunication companies are cheating consumers through dropped calls, unsolicited messages, and unloaded internet bundles.

The lead petitioner Justus Amanya says that currently there are no laws to protect consumers and that the Ugandan communication commission seems more interested in taxing the telecommunication companies which are making abnormal profits after cheating Ugandans

In response speaker Kadaga indicated that the sector minister will be asked to table a bill and if this does not yield results a member of parliament will table a private members bill
